Hello There, it's a pleasure to meet you!

We're Co-owners and Lead Guides, Matthew Baxley and Lindsey Gau. We're passionate about people, personal progress and the places that allow us to experience growth.  Not only is this our passion, but its our specialty.  We offer specialty adventures unlike anything else in the state of Minnesota.

Whats makes us unique?

First, it is our combination of canoeing and rock climbing into one unique adventure for you and your family.  Second, it is our unique combination of experience as your guides.  Both Lindsey and I have dedicated our personal and professional life to developing skills in navigating the wilderness and human relationships. Third, co-owning Spirit Guiding Adventures has allowed us to offer our unique adventures with an emphasis on building bonds and creating memories.

Lindsey has over twelve years experience with water safety as well as team building, ropes courses, and climbing towers as an outdoor and environmental educator. Matthew has over four years experience in outdoor education including work as a Field Guide and Assistant Director of Climbing through the YMCA. Matthew also holds an instructor certification with the American Mountain Guide Association.

Co-Owning Spirit Guiding Adventures has allowed us to cultivate our passion for the integration of adventure, wilderness, growth, healing, and human relationships.  Through direct experience, we have learned that humans can develop, learn, and grow together through challenges when feeling safe to explore new things.

Howdy, I'm Matthew

First and foremost, I believe in the enduring power of the wilderness and every person’s ability to learn and grow when connected to this power.  Over the last two decades, I have compiled a rich variety of complimentary skills, experiences and training that lead to the creation of Spirit Guiding Adventures.  I have dedicated myself to numerous years working with adventure experience to facilitate personal and relational growth.  I spent six of these years as an experiential educator including emphasis on guiding outdoor and environmental education.  I have taken tremendous joy in coaching climbing towers, high ropes courses, and outdoor climbing for youth as a way of facilitating transformation into confidence and self-reliance.

More recently, I committed myself to obtaining a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, followed by gaining the title of Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist.  The last three years of clinical practice working with individuals, families, couples, and groups continue to teach me and take me deeper into how we grow and develop into more content and fulfilled individuals.

In 2016, Matthew obtained his Single Pitch Instructor Certification (SPI) through the American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA). This program teaches climbing instructors to proficiently facilitate and instruct the sport of rock climbing in a single pitch setting. The SPI is the only internationally recognized single pitch climbing instructor certification program in the United States.

Hello, I'm Lindsey

My ambition is to live in a way that fosters passion, love, growth, healing, awareness, and compassion. I strive to live this way through an intimate relationship with mother earth as well as the respect for her and the wisdom and healing she provides. My desire for this way of life is not only for myself, but to support others in similar experiences.

Over the past 12 years I have worked in the area of experiential education as an; indoor and outdoor water safety instructor, outdoor educator, team building instructor and facilitated rope courses and rock wall climbing experiences. I currenlty hold a Wilderness First Responder certification through Wilderness Medical Associates. I obtained my masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and transitioned into the world of healing as a therapist. As a therapist I worked with a variety of individuals, couples, and families and developed a special interest in the area of domestic and sexual violence.

My love for the outdoors, my desire to walk alongside others through growth and healing, as well as the dream of integrating these two passions has helped to create the birth place of Spirit Guiding Adventurous.

WHAT IS THE “SPIRIT” IN SPIRIT GUIDING ADVENTURES?

The human spirit includes our intellect, emotions, fears, passions, creativity and so much more. We believe in the Spirit that manifests in family, tribe, and community, as well as the individual. We believe it is necessary to reconnect with one’s self, and the larger universe through the wilderness. For the Human Spirit, this is an essential path to growth and healing. In a time where life can feel consumed by business, stress, and the need to always be moving, there is no better time than now to step away, reflect and reconnect. We provide the time and space to do this in the context of wilderness and adventure.
